We have chosen our representative for the Young Ambassador
competition this year.
Peter Dennett was presented with the trophy at our December business meeting and will now go forward to represent Chichester at the District finals. Peter addressed our meeting and told us of his voluntary work and, as always with this competition, it was impressive to hear from a member of our young community who is giving so much of his time and energy to voluntary causes.
Unfortunately, due to a change in the date, Peter was unable to attend the District finals but we are pleased to have been able to recognise his good work.

| Christmas dinner this year was at the Chichester Festival
Theatre and we were pleased to welcome Lions guests from Germany with
their daughter who is currently studying in Chichester
We were also pleased to welcome Christine & Brendan Sweeney visiting the area from Glantawe Lions Club |

Santa has been and gone for another year.
Many thanks to everybody that contributed to our collection in these difficult times and also to the friends of Lions and the Police Cadets that joined Santa and helped him on his rounds. Happily the tour was completed without any accidents on the ice, although it was reported that Santa was seen doing a triple salko with double lutz on more than one occasion!! The Carol Float season was again launched at the Guide hall with the help of Guides and Brownies and in the presence of the Mayor of Chichester. We took the opportunity to invite representatives of charities to receive donations including Stonepillow refuge and Tozer house - shown in the picture. |
| In November we enjoyed a combined social event with our friends from Southbourne Lions. This has become an annual event in which the clubs compete in a very light hearted skittles competition and I am delighted to report that the trophy returned to Chichester. | |

District Governor Eddie Warne and his wife Maureen came to
Chichester to be our guest at our sight dinner on October 20th.
Eddie made the mistake of coming early to see the workshop and was quickly put to work! Later at the dinner we had a presentation from the charity Living Paintings who demonstrated the way in which they produce books with pictures in relief to make them accessible to blind children and adults. Subsequently we have donated £2,500 to Living Paintings to sponsor a new book. Lion President Brian presented cheques to Apuldram Centre and Medico France and Chichester Lions members Des Hodnett and Tony Harrison were presented with service awards. |

| On World Sight day - October 7th - we opened up our specs workshop for the first time for a public open day. We were pleased to welcome visitors - both Lions and non-lions - many of whom got stuck into some spec sorting. An old friend and supporter, Jim Cawte, won the prize for longest distance travelled (from Norfolk)! | |
| On 26th September we were pleased to welcome a group of Past District Governors and their wives visiting Chichester for their annual lunch. Richard and Corina Hall from Chichester met them at the specs workshop. The class of 97/98 included PCC Viresh Paul (A), PDG Ted Graham (SW), PDG Brian Yeoman (A), PDG Fred Massey (D), PDG David Smart (EA) and PDG Bill Blake (SE). |

In September a group travelled to Chartres to see the illuminations. On the way we called in at Medico-France and you can view the video of our tour of their workshops on the spectacle recycling page . We spent two nights in Chartres. We were invited by the deputy mayor of Chartres to a VIP reception on Friday night - where we met with lions from our twin club of Chartres Vallee de l'eure - and to a reception on Saturday lunch time at the town hall. The hospitality we received was as always very special and the spectacular illuminations around the city - the picture shows the North door of the cathedral - were breathtaking.

On 12th and 13th September we heard that there was to be gladiatorial combat at the Roman Palace in Fishbourne. We thought it likely that Lions would be needed for such an event and offered our services - so imagine our disappointment when we found that we were organising the car parking and not eating Christians! The staff and volunteers at the Palace were very hospitable and I was quite glad, when I saw the ferocity of the gladiators, that we were eating their delicious fruit cake instead. |
